Dowd Scores in OT to Lift No. 9 Queens past Lock Haven

CHARLOTTE, N.C. – The Queen's University of Charlotte women's lacrosse team ranked No.9 in the nation, defeated No. 13 Lock Haven in an overtime thriller this afternoon by the score of 7-6. With the win, Queens improves to 5-2 on the season, while the Bald Eagles fall to 3-1 on the season.
 
Kelly Dowd of Queens netted today's game-winner in the game's third overtime period with 3:22 left on the clock. She finished the game with a hat trick and one assist for four points. Alexandra Bruder added two goals, while Shannon Mansberger and Hanna Scott chipped in with one goal apiece.
 
The Bald Eagles' Rachel Engler put a goal in the back of the net on an assist by Shannon Bissnette just 47 seconds into today's game, and two minutes later the duo scored again to put Lock Haven ahead, 2-0. Katie Costanza followed with another for the visiting team to give the Bald Eagles a 3-0 start with 24:32 remaining in the first half.
 
Queens soon answered with a 3-0 run of their own as Bruder and Mansberger got the Royals going with a pair of unassisted goals. Thereafter, a goal put in the back of the net by Dowd tied the game at 3-3, with 18:16 remaining. The Bald Eagles went on another 2-0 run on goals from Karli Gilbert and Engler, but once again the Royals matched their scores with goals from Scott and Dowd. The game would sit tied at 5-5 at the half.
 
Engler and Shannon Bissnette paired up again at the start of the second to return control to the Bald Eagles, but a goal from Bruder at 23:59 soon knotted the game at 6-6. Both teams then went scoreless for the remainder of regulation taking the game into overtime.
 
The Royals controlled possession in overtime, winning the draw four-of-five times. Dowd's goal came with 22 seconds left before the teams would have been forced to change ends.  
 
Queens totaled 22 shots, putting 17 shots on goal. The Royals also edged Lock Haven in ground balls, 26-21. Chase Brokaw took the win in goal after totaling seven saves.
 
The Bald Eagles were led by Engler who totaled four points on four goals. Bissnette had three points on three assists. Hannah Houde totaled 10 saves.
 
The Royals can be seen in action again tomorrow, Saturday March 18, as they host the Brevard College Tornados at Dickson Field. The game is set to begin at 4 p.m.
