No. 6 Queens Defeats Augusta to Play in NCAA DII Southeast Regional Championship

CHARLOTTE, N.C. – The sixth-ranked Queens University of Charlotte men's basketball team (30-3) advances to the NCAA Division II Men's Basketball Southeast Regional Championship with an 88-82 win over fifth-seeded Augusta University (24-8). The win for the regional host moves the Royals into the Sweet 16 for the first time since the 2003 season when Queens made it to the semifinals of the Elite 8. The win tonight also makes this year's team the winningest in program history, bettering the 2002-2003 team's 29 win season.

Todd Withers poured in 25 points on 8-of-15 shooting from the three and pulled down 13 rebounds for his sixth double-double of the year. Mike Davis added 19 points, while Ike Agusi totaled 14 points and seven assists. Daniel Camps chipped in with 12 points and eight rebounds.

The Royals got off to yet another hot start connecting on five-of-eight triples at the beginning of tonight's game to hold a 15-7 lead not even five minutes into play. Augusta was forced to call a timeout to stop the run, and out of the short break they would get going. The Jaguars responded with a 12-3 run to take a 19-18 lead at 12:21. From that point on, the fast-paced game went back and forth seeing three ties and two lead changes before three points the old-fashioned way from Kyle Doyle gave Augusta the lead for good in the period at 5:42. The Jaguars went on to lead by as much as eight before taking a 49-43 advantage into the locker room at the half.

The Jaguars quickly extended their lead to its largest, 13 points, just 2:10 in to the second half, and they would hold control of the game for much of the period. With 7:43 to play and Queens trailing by seven points, 72-65, the Royals went on an 11-1 run to take a 76-73 lead with 3:27 on the clock. Withers was pivotal in the run knocking down back-to-back triples to help his squad overcome their deficit. Queens never relinquished their lead for the remainder of the game, increasing it to as much as eight points before the final horn sounded.

Keshun Sherrill totaled 24 points to lead the Jaguars, while Doyle added 16 points and eight rebounds. Tyvez Monroe scored 14 points, and Tamyrik Fields chipped in with 10 points.

Tonight's win over Augusta was the first in program history as the Jaguars now lead the series 3-1.

The Royals will face second-seeded Lincoln Memorial University in the NCAA DII Southeast Regional Championship on Tuesday night. It will be the fourth time the two teams have met this season. Tipoff is set for 7 p.m.
