CHARLOTTE, N.C. – The Queens University of Charlotte women's lacrosse team fell 11-8 this afternoon to No. 5 Florida Southern College. The loss is second of the season for the eighth-ranked Royals who now sit at 4-2 on the year. The Mocs improve to 6-2 with the win.
Hanna Scott led the Royals' scoring efforts today, recording a hat trick on just four shots.
Allison Conn added two goals, while
Kelly Dowd tallied one goal and two assists. Dowd also totaled seven draw controls and five ground balls.
Abigail Paulus notched one goal and one assist.
Trailing 5-1 in the first half, with 2:16 on the clock, the Royals would get active on the offensive end tallying two goals in the final 20 seconds of play to trail 5-3 at the break.
After over 10 minutes of action with no goals in the second, the Mocs added two points to their score with back-to-back goals at 18:05 and 16:14. Queens' Dowd was the next player to score, finding the back of the net at the nine-minute mark to make the score 7-4. Florida Southern then put three consecutive goals on the board to increase their lead to five, 9-4, with just 3:15 to play.
However, the Royals would not back down as they answered with four straight goals in the final three minutes of regulation to close the gap to just two, 10-8, with 48 seconds on the clock. Unfortunately, that was as close as the home team would get as the Mocs took the next draw and found a way to score with 28 seconds left to secure their victory.
The Royals were edged narrowly in shots, 23-22, though Florida Southern put 20 shots on goal compared to Queens' 12. Queens won the battle at the draw, 13-8, but lost the battle for ground balls, 19-17. Goalkeeper
Chase Brokaw totaled nine saves in the loss.
Kendall Kerge led the Mocs with three goals and one assist today. Meghan O'Brien added two goals and one assist, and Catherine DeKorte tallied two goals as well. Alanna Zambetti took the win in goal after totaling four saves.
Queens will return to action on Friday, March 17 when they host Lock Haven University at 3 p.m.
