CHARLOTTE, N.C.- The Queens University of Charlotte men's tennis team, ranked 10^th in the Southeast region, started the season with a dominate performance in their season opener on Saturday, February 4, 2017. The Royals defeated Mars Hill 8-1 to move to 1-0 both in overall play and in league play. Mars Hill drops to 0-6 overall and 0-2 in the South Atlantic Conference.
 
"This was a good start for us," said Head Coach Billy Boykin. "Ten different players contributed in this win today, so it was really a team effort. We've been practicing hard for the last few weeks and our guys are hungry for competition. I was particularly proud of the four freshman that competed out there for us today. They performed well in their first dual match."

As the day started, the Royals jumped out to an early 3-0 start taking all three doubles courts. Will Roberson and Joel Dunlap secured the first point leading the Royals to an 8-0 victory over Black Covington and Fernando Neto. Sebastian Meum and Giovanni Setti followed taking the top flight with an 8-2 score over Alberto Ortiz and Ben Reid. Keeping the doubles court in the Royals favor, Jules Athalis and Agustin Aran Martin went 8-5 against Pedro Pinass and Carlos Riesco on court three.
 
Moving into singles play, Zachary Williams pushed the team a step closer to the win, seizing the fifth flight with a 6-0, 6-1 score against Covington. Athalis grabbed a 6-1, 6-2 first flight win over Ortiz as Andor Vas gave the team the victory with a 6-0, 6-0 performance against Pinass on court four.
 
The day concluded with Martin going 6-1, 6-3 on court three over Reid while Paolo Bompieri finished with a 6-7, 6-3, 6-1 three-set win over Riesco, respectively.
 
The men's team will be back at home tomorrow, hosting College of Charleston. The match is set to begin at 10 a.m., at Freedom Park.
