Stewart’s Buzzer-Beater Lifts Royals on Senior Day

Box Score CHARLOTTE, N.C. – The Queens University of Charlotte women's basketball team grabbed the win in the last game of the regular season today. The Royals topped the visiting Tusculum Pioneers 58-56 with a last second layup by Maggie Stewart to advance the team into the first round of the South Atlantic Conference Championships for the first time in program history. Queens moved to a 5-22 overall record and 5-17 in the SAC. Tusculum fell to 6-20 overall and 5-17 in the league.

Sarah Henson and Mendy McNeese led the Royals with equaling 14 point games. Stewart following with 13 points as both her and Henson led the team with seven rebounds apiece.

A fast start put the Royals up 6-2 half way through the first quarter as the Pioneers' only points came off a pair of free-throw shots. However, the visiting Tusculum squad soon secured control of the game, reaching out to a six-point gap with 2:43 to play in the period. With baskets from McNeese and Cheyenne Logan, the Royals came within two points before the start of the second ten-minute period.

Both teams landed baskets but Queens finally grabbed the tying shot (18-18) with a free-throw by Henson. A four-point-play by Sydney Wilson put the Royals back on the defensive as they were unable to move the scoreboard back in their favor. Queens would head into the break trailing by just one possession, 26-23.

The largest lead of the third quarter came immediately as Wilson found a layup to put her Pioneers up by five (28-23). Queens rattled off a 9-2 run to claim the lead with Henson finding the shot. The two teams swapped points but Queens took the lead heading into the final quarter of play.

Quick baskets by the Royals had them push out to a six-point gap with McNeese topping the run with two points from the line. Tusculum found a tie at 47-47 and again at 49-49 but the Royals never gave up the lead. With six second remaining, the Pioneers found a three-point basket from Callie Patterson to force an overtime but a leading pass from Henson to Stewart under the basket gave the Royals the victory.

Wilson led the Pioneers with 15 points followed by Kasey Johnson with 14. Tusculum posted two players with ten points as Maelyn Head tallied the stat in addition to nine rebounds while Patterson added two assists to the line item.

Queens will head into the first round of the conference tournament traveling to play Lincoln Memorial on March 1, at 6 p.m.
