HARTSVILLE, S.C. – The second-ranked Queens University of Charlotte men's basketball team trailed at the half for just the second time this season but rebounded to secure an 82-75 win over Coker College on Monday night.
Playing in the team's third game in the last six days, Queens improved to 11-0 overall and 5-0 in South Atlantic Conference play despite a season-high 21 turnovers. The Royals overcame the miscues by making 31-of-60 shots (51.7%)from the floor and holding a 45-28 advantage in total rebounds.
Coker fell to 6-7 overall with a 2-3 league mark after making just 14-of-26 free throw attempts and scoring 10 points off the bench in comparison to 28 reserve points for the Royals.
Queens opened the contest with a 6-2 run and held a 24-16 lead at the midway point of the first half following a made jump shot from senior
Ike Agusi. Coker was able to close the gap to one-point following a layup and made free throw from Jake Barrett with just over seven minutes to play in the half.
Two free throws by Coker's Marquis Green tied the score at 36-36 late in the half as both teams went scoreless for 4:21 until a Green jump shot with two seconds remaining gave the Cobras a two-point lead at intermission.
Senior
Todd Withers made a three-pointer to begin the second half of play as the Royals put together a 9-2 run to build a 45-40 lead with 17:19 left to play. The Cobras retook the lead just one minute later and built a five-point led of their own until a
Mike Davis jumper ended the run.
The lead changed hands three times over the next 10 minutes of action until senior
Darryl White converted a layup and a free throw to put Queens up by two with 6:34 on the clock. Coker continued to keep it close, but back-to-back three-pointers from Withers and Agusi gave the Royals a six-point lead it never relinquished.
Withers led all players with 19 points and 12 rebounds for his 12th career double-double as well as three blocks on the defensive end.
Junior
Shaun Willett made 6-of-8 shots from the floor and 3-of-4 free throw attempts to finish with a season-high 15 points and seven rebounds, while senior
Jalin Alexander followed with 11 points. Agusi was the fourth Royal in double figures, scoring 10 points to go along with five assists, four rebounds and three steals.
The Royals take on Johnson C. Smith University tomorrow at 7 p.m. the Levine Center then have 11 days off before returning to the court on Dec. 30 to face Tarleton State University in Stephenville, Texas.
