JEFFERSON CITY, TENN. – The regular season came to end for the Queens University of Charlotte women's volleyball team on Saturday as the Royals fell 3-0 (25-20, 25-22, 25-17) to Carson-Newman University.
Despite the loss, Queens (20-7, 14-6) remained among the South Atlantic Conference leaders and secured its spot as the No. 3 overall seed in the upcoming SAC Women's Volleyball Championship. The Royals will host No. 6 seed Mars Hill University on Tuesday in a quarterfinal matchup.
The Eagles (15-13, 10-10) moved up to the tournament's No. 4 seed with the win and will host Tusculum College in the quarterfinals. Carson-Newman forced QU to hit below .100 for just the third time all year to secure the victory.
Queens and Carson-Newman traded points in the beginning of set one before six unanswered points put the Royals ahead by five. The Eagles responded with five consecutive points of their own to close the gap, eventually taking a lead at 15-14 and move on to an opening set win.
The Royals led early on in the second set, opening with a 5-1 run. Queens continued to lead throughout much of the frame before Carson-Newman used a service ace to claim its first advantage at 19-18. The Eagles scored six of the last eight points of the set to go ahead 2-0.
Carson-Newman was in control from beginning to end in the third and final set to complete the sweep.
Freshman
Casey Tarvin led the Royals with 13 kills to go along with eight digs, while fellow freshman
Chanel Turner followed with six kills. Senior
Sydney Kunz finished with 31 assists and 11 digs for a double-double as sophomore
Lexie Dolecheck and freshman
JayCee Jones each had 12 digs on defense.
The SAC Championships begin on Nov. 14 with Queens and Mars Hill scheduled for a 7 p.m. start time in Charlotte, N.C.
