Royals Take Down No. 17 Lander in OT

Box Score

GREENWOOD, S.C. - The Queens University of Charlotte men's soccer team defeated No. 17 Lander University (10-3-1) tonight, 3-2, in a nonconference match at Lander. The Royals have not faced the Bearcats since 2013 when they fell 2-1 to them in the NCAA Division II Men's Soccer Championships. The win helps the Royals conclude its regular season at 7-5-4 as they wait to see who they will face in the quarterfinal round of the SAC Men's Soccer Championships.

The Royals got on the board first, in the 32 minute, when a Bearcats defender scored an own goal after a Queens free kick.

Queens then found the back of the net again in the 54th minute when Liam Doyle found Edmundo Robinson who fired a shot into the net putting the Royals up, 2-0. Lander battled back, and Jordan Skelton put them on the board in the 69th minute when Oliver Brock took a corner kick that found Skelton allowing him to score. The Bearcats then tied the score in the 77th minute when Lars Kveseth found Richard Bryan who scored a goal that equalized things at two apiece before regulation ended.

Queens took the match just before the first overtime period ended thanks to Juan Carlos Carrillo scoring the golden goal in the 100th minute. The win for Queens snapped a 14-match win streak for the Bearcats at home that dates back to September 4, 2016. It also snaps an eight-game unbeaten streak for Lander who hasn't lost since falling on the road to Anderson early in the season.

Both the Royals and the Bearcats totaled five shots on goal each. Additionally, Queens goalkeeper, Sergio Lemus, and Lander goalkeeper, Aleksander Holboe, grabbed three saves apiece.

Queens currently sits in the middle of the South Atlantic Conference with 12 points as the regular season comes to a close. The postseason conference tournament begins Tuesday, Oct. 31 with the quarterfinal round taking place at the higher seed's institution.
