NEWBERRY, S.C. – The Queens University of Charlotte women's volleyball team took down the Wolves of Newberry College by a score of 3-1 (25-20, 22-25, 25-22, 25-12) on Saturday evening.
The victory gave Queens (15-4, 9-3 SAC) its second win over Newberry (8-10, 4-8) this season after securing a 3-0 decision on Oct. 3 in Charlotte. The Royals hit .240 as a team and collected 10 service aces for its eighth straight win.
Queens opened the match on a 5-0 run and cruised to a five-point win in the first set before Newberry responded with a win of its own in set two.
The Royals once again held an early lead in the third set of action, highlighted by two kills from senior
Alex Thompson and a service ace from fellow senior
Rebecca Cochran. The Wolves and Royals remained in a closely contest battle throughout the frame, but three unanswered points ended the set with QU on top.
Despite a brief 3-1 for Newbery in the early portion of the fourth set, Queens was in control for almost the entire frame. The Royals used a 9-1 run midway through the set to build a17-6 lead before coming away with the victory.
Junior
Taylor Henry led all players and tied a career-high with 16 kills and a .467 hitting percentage to go along with three service aces.
Cochran also had three service aces in the match, to go along with 11 kills and 11 digs, while senior
Sydney Kunz was the third Royals with three service aces. Kunz also tallied 11 digs while directing the offense with 42 assists.
Thompson finished with eight kills and a .500 hitting mark, as freshman libero
JayCee Jones led the team with 13 digs.
Queens completes its three-game road trip on Tuesday, Oct. 17 in Anderson, S.C. when the Royals take on Anderson University at 7 p.m.
