NEWBERRY, S.C.- The Queens University of Charlotte women's basketball fell to Newberry University on Wednesday, January 25, 2017. The 74-41 loss moved Queens to a 4-14 overall record and 4-9 in the South Atlantic Conference while Newberry moved to 11-6 overall and 7-6 within the league.
McKell Oliverio led the team with 14 points adding two rebounds.
Cheyenne Logan saw seven points and six rebounds while
Sarah Henson tabbed six points and six rebounds.
Starting with a 4-0 run, Queens jumped out to an early start. The Royals held the lead until the 3:58 mark when Newberry's Hannah Lepaio netted a shot to put the Wolves up by two. Oliverio found the tying shot at 2:17 as both team swapped points towards the end of the quarter. The Royals regained their lead with 39 seconds remaining on the clock as Logan found a lane to the basket for a 12-10 score.
The two teams continued to battle as Queens maintained a step ahead until 7:17 remaining in the second quarter. Jaya Schultz found a layup to move the Wolves ahead 18-16; however,
Mendy McNeese was there to answer for the Royals. Momentum switched when Newberry put together a 15-0 run that took five and half minutes off the clock.
Newberry continued to extend their lead in the third quarter, moving ahead by 26 points with 4:38 left in the quarter.
Maggie Stewart broke the dry spell with back-to-back free-throws. Oliverio would add a three-pointer just moments later as
Victoria Robinson added one more basket before the quarter came to a close to move the team to a 52-27 score.
Although the Royals found 14 points in the fourth quarter, Newberry posted 22 points to take the win.
Nicola Handreck led the team with 17 points, five rebounds, and a steal. Schultz closed the night with 16 points and six rebounds while Meg Essex added 12 points and five blocks.
Queens will be at home on Saturday, January 28
th to face Carson-Newman. Tip-off against the Eagles is set for 2 p.m.
