NEWBERRY, S.C. – The Queens University of Charlotte men's basketball team, ranked No. 8 in the NABC Poll and No. 5 in the DII Media Poll, moved to 18-1 on the year and 12-1 in South Atlantic Conference play after taking an 89-84 win at Newberry College tonight. The Royals complete the home-and-home series sweep over the Wolves with the win, while Newberry falls to 12-7 on the year and 7-6 in the league.
Â
It was a tale of two halves tonight as the Royals struggled putting the ball in the hoop in the first half, shooting just 29-percent from the floor. However, Queens would come back in the second to shoot an impressive 72-percent from the floor to overcome a 15 points deficit and walk away victorious.
Â
Five Royals reached double-digit scoring tonight with Newberry native
Jalin Alexander's 18 points leading the way.
Todd Withers recorded a double-double with 14 points and 12 rebounds, while
Ike Agusi,
Mike Davis and
Daniel Camps each scored 15 points. Additionally,
Darryl White and Camps both pulled down seven rebounds, and Agusi dished out six assists.

After Queens began the game with a 7-3 run, the Wolves quickly responded to tie the game at 10-10 with 14:24 on the clock. Newberry took over the lead at 12:53 when James Stepp knocked down a three-pointer to put the Wolves up, 13-12. Another tie would follow but Queens' offense soon went cold as Newberry put together a 20-5 run. With Newberry holding a 38-23 lead at 3:12, Camps scored a free-throw to end a drought for the Royals that lasted just over three minutes. Camps' bucket started a 6-0 spurt for the Royals that helped them chip away at the deficit. A pair of foul shots from Agusi with 1:11 to play brought the Royals to within seven, but the Wolves' Quaman Burton answered with a three to give Newberry a 41-31 lead at the break.
Â
A 13-6 run at the start of the second half capped by a three-pointer from Withers brought the Royals to within three, 47-44, of Newberry, forcing a timeout by the Wolves at 16:17. The Royals then went scoreless until, again, a free-throw from Camps at 11:48 ended their cold spell. Camps' shot sparked a 12-1 push that returned the lead to Queens for the first time since the 13:53 mark in the first. Four lead changes followed with Alexander putting the Royals on top, 61-59, with a triple at 9:09.
Â
However, Newberry did not go away quietly as a pair of threes from Stepp and Burton returned the lead to their side, 72-71, with 4:46 to play. Fortunately for Queens, Agusi found
Jared Hendryx for an alley-oop on the next offensive possession, returning control of the game to the Royals for good with 4:30 left in regulation.
Â
Marshall Lange led the Wolves with 18 points this evening, while Gerald Evans added 15 points. Stepp and Burton chipped in with 12 points apiece.
