CHARLOTTE, N.C. – The Queens University of Charlotte men's basketball team collected a 72-70 home win today over Carson-Newman College, improving to 19-1 on the year and 13-1 in South Atlantic Conference play. The win over the Eagles completes the home-and-home series sweep for the Royals, who rank No. 5 in the DII Media Poll and No. 8 in the NABC Poll. Carson-Newman moves on with a 12-8 overall record and a 9-5 league record.
Â
Jalin Alexander led the Royals' scoring efforts for the fourth game in a row after totaling 20 points on 7-of-11 shooting. Alexander connected on 6-of-8 from the three and also grabbed five rebounds.
Todd Withers followed with his second consecutive double-double after totaling 13 points and 13 rebounds. He also recorded a career-high five blocks, four assists and two steals.
Mike Davis and
Jared Hendryx each totaled 10 points, while
Daniel Camps tallied eight points and six rebounds.
Â
Queens got off to a hot 13-3 start in today's game en route to building an 18-point lead over the Eagles. An emphatic dunk from Camps at 5:08 would give the Royals the 31-12 lead. However, Queens would only connect on one more field goal before the halftime break as Carson-Newman closed the gap to nine, 32-23, heading into the locker room.
Â
Withers got the Royals going in the second half with a triple that put Queens ahead 12, 35-23, just 23 seconds into play. Another three from Alexander soon followed and Queens was leading 38-25 at 18:42. However, the Eagles didn't let the margin grow much more than that as the game went back and forth for majority of the period.
Â
Queens held an 11-point lead, 56-45, with 8:20 to play when a three-pointer from Carson-Newman's Malik Abraham sparked a 15-3 run that brought the visitors within one, 60-59, of the Royals at 4:06. Soon after, Abraham tied the game at 65-65 knocking down the front end of a one-and-one, but a three from
Ike Agusi kept the Eagles from taking the lead. Carson-Newman would get within one of the Royals once more, but a Hendryx dunk and a pair of foul shots from Agusi would seal the deal for Queens.
Â
Shaun Jones scored 16 points to lead the Eagles, while Sawyer Williams added 14 points. Zack Pangallo totaled 13 points, and Abraham finished with 11 points.
Â
The Royals will hit the road again for their next game on Wednesday, February 1 at Coker College. The Royals handled the Cobras, 83-55, back in December and will be looking to complete the season series sweep. Tipoff is set for 8 p.m.
