Queens Drops to Anderson

ANDERSON, S.C.-  The Queens University of Charlotte women's basketball team fell to the sixth ranked team in the region in the D2SIDA Southeast Region Poll, Anderson University, on Saturday, January 21, 2017. The 60-48 road loss dropped Queens to a 4-13 overall record and 4-8 within the South Atlantic Conference while Anderson moved to 12-3 overall and 9-2 within the league.

Maggie Stewart led the team with 17 points in the game, for a season high. McKell Oliverio added 11 points, five rebounds, and three assists.

The Royals started the game with hot hands out scoring the Trojans 19-14 in the first quarter of the game. Queens leaped out to a 6-0 start after Stewart netted two baskets and Mendy McNeese found a pair of points within the first two minutes of play. Anderson made their first shot of the game with 7:36 remaining in the first quarter but Queens soon built an 11-7 lead with half the period left to play. Cheyenne Logan snapped a two and a half minute dry spell by both teams to put the Royals up by six, 13-7, to tie the team's largest lead of the quarter.

Despite the security built in the first quarter, Queens struggled to find the basket in the second allowing Anderson to take a narrow 26-21 lead heading into the locker rooms.

The Trojans opened the second half finding a ten point lead with 8:26 left in the quarter, eventually pushing their lead to 11 with a three pointer by Anderson's Heather Jankowy. However, Queens would not fall as Oliverio started the team on a build that would pull the Royals back within three as Stewart forced a shot for a 36-33 score with 4:10 on the clock. Anderson eventually regained their gap putting up a 7-4 run in the last two minutes of play to move ahead nine points, 46-37.

Despite six points from Sarah Henson and three from Cheyenne Logan in the fourth quarter, the Royals fell 60-48 on the road.

Jankowy led the Trojans with 12 points adding three assists. Tamia Eatmon added 11 points and six rebounds to the day while Jasmine Franklin posted another 10 points to the team with seven rebounds.

Queens will head to Newberry on Wednesday, January 25 for a 6 p.m., tip-off time.
