Royals Grab Win in First Competition on the Road

BREVARD, N.C.-  The Queens University of Charlotte volleyball team (3-2, 1-0 SAC) grabbed a win in their first road game of the year on Thursday, September 8, 2016. The Royals topped Brevard College (0-5, 0-1 SAC) 3-2 after going 24-26, 25-13, 22-25, 25-18, 15-10 for the win.

Queens tallied 15 blocks in the match in addition to 10 service aces. Jessica Raines led the team on the floor in kills tabbing 12.  Meredith Jones fell second in the category with 11 kills. Megan Mancini led in digs grabbing 15 while Sydney Kunz tabbed 33 assists. Additionally, Taylor Henry found four service aces to contribute to the team's total.

Brevard was led by Callie Chappel who had 17 kills. Erin Barr would post 43 assists in the match while Aleksandra Vrvilo grabbed 15 digs.

Fighting back from a 5-1 Tornado start, the Royals tied the first set at 9-9 with a kill from Jones. The two teams stayed evenly paced during the set until Brevard found three back-to-back points to take the game.

Queens broke out first in the second set gaining a three point gap on the Tornados. The Royals would add to their early start with a 7-0 run to put them ahead 17-7. The gap was too much for Brevard as Queens evened the match at a set apiece.

In another closely contested game, the Royals narrowly missed claiming the third set as Brevard went 25-22 for the win. Queens did add three kills at the end of the set from Rebecca Cochran, who tabbed one, and Raines, who tabbed two, to force the Tornados to use a timeout. However, the team would be unable to recover.

Queens held a slight lead throughout the fourth set. The team saw a slow climb to their 25th point with two late service errors aiding in the battle for a deciding set.

The Royals had the upper hand in the last set of the night forcing a timeout call by Brevard at 8-4. The Tornados bounced back tabbing the next two points but Queens responded with a kill from Raines and a service ace from Kunz. Not done, Brevard battled to come within two points of the Royals at 12-10 but Queens held them there as a service ace from Lexie DoleCheck marked the win in favor of Queens.

The team will continue their season on the road as they head to Catawba next Tuesday, September 13, for a 7 p.m., match.
