SALISBURY, N.C.- Â The Queens University of Charlotte volleyball team (4-2, 2-0 SAC) tabbed their second conference win of the season as they defeated Catawba College (2-5, 1-2 SAC) in five sets on Tuesday, September 13, 2016. The Royals grabbed the win after going 25-27, 25-19, 25-22, 20-25, 15-13 in the match as
Rebecca Cochran broke a personal career record with 19 kills in the competition.
Jessica Raines added 17 kills to the night in addition to 13 kills from
Meredith Jones.
Hannah Lewis led the night in blocks with seven while
Sydney Kunz contributed with 50 assists.
Catawba was led by McKenzie Garrison who found 20 kills in the match. Rachel Stanford put up 51 assists while Meredith Furr tabbed 25 digs.
In an even run, the start of the match saw both teams battle through the opening set. Trailing by two, Queens called a timeout at 14-12 to help launch to the Royals on a 5-0 run. Queens held the lead in the late moments of the set, 23-19, but the Indians concluded the game with an 8-2 rally.
Refocusing, Queens a put together a 5-1 run to move ahead in second set 13-7. With momentum in their favor, the Royals never conceded the lead as the worked their way to a 25-19 score with Raines finding the winning hit.
The Indians found their momentum in set three, taking a 6-1 run to start play. Queens battled to come within one at 9-8 before taking control of the game at 14-13. Despite Catawba finding a tying point at 21-21, Queens rattled off three back-to-back kills to move ahead in the match.
Catawba held control throughout set four. Queens found themselves trailing 22-14 before the Royals put up four unanswered to contest the game. Despite the rally, the Royals would head into a fifth set against the Indians.
In the deciding set, Catawba struck first reaching a 4-1 lead over Queens. However, a six point run by the Royals switched momentum as Queens overtook the set at 13-11. The two teams swapped points but the
Alex Thompson gave the Royals the win with a powerful hit to end the day.
Queens will host their first home conference match on Friday, September 16. The Royals welcome Wingate to Curry Arena for a 7 p.m., start time.
