Queens Finishes Day Two with Win over Augusta and Loss to Lander

CHARLOTTE, N.C.-  The Queens University of Charlotte volleyball team (2-2) tallied a win over Augusta University (1-2) and suffered a loss to Lander University (4-0) on the second day of the Queens Fall Volleyball Tournament. The first matchup of the day against Lander resulted in a 25-23, 14-25, 27-25, 25-20 Bearcat score. Queens tabbed their win in three sets going 25-20, 25-22, 25-16 against Augusta.

In the team's concluding match against Augusta, the Royals tallied a total of 43 kills to top the Jaguars who tabbed 37. Queens led the battle at the net securing eight blocks in the match while hitting around the upfront blockers for Augusta.

Jones led from the floor with 17 kills. Alex Thompson helped Queens with seven of its eight team blocks while Sydney Kunz assisted on 31 points.

For the Jaguars, Savanna Roy put up 11 kills. Sammie Baker led in assists with 30 as Cat DeSilvester tallied 19 digs.

Queens started set 1 moving ahead 8-3 before Augusta called a timeout. They would be forced to use their second timeout moments later as the Royals continued to add kills to make it a 12-5 game. The second timeout allowed the Jaguars to regroup as they came within five points at 15-10; however, Queens held them at a distance as they worked to the set win.

An even start to the second set had the two teams holding together at 8-8. Augusta found their run tabbing four straight, forcing a Queens' timeout (12-8). An 8-1 run out of the timeout gave the Royals the upper hand that they would keep until the end of the match.

It was a slow build for Queens in the third set but the Royals eventually found their momentum as they took a 14-7 lead. With a strong offensive presence, the Royals tabbed the match at 25-16 after the team found 15 kills.

In the Royals' first match of the day, Queens out hit the Bearcats tabbing 54 kills to 47. The difference in the match, however, would come off of serves as Lander tabbed 11 service aces to the Royals five.

Jones again led the floor with a tally of 15 kills. Jessica Raines totaled 11 as Rebecca Cochran tabbed nine. Cochran also produced 17 digs for the team, the second highest tying with Sydney Kunz. Megan Mancini would lead in that category with 17.

For the Bearcats, Halle Dotson led the team with 12 kills in the match. Right behind her was Kirstin Martindale with 11 and Amanda Medlock with 10. Hannah McManus would take 23 digs during the four set competition.

The first set saw a fast start from Lander who reached out to a 6-1 score. Queens battled back to within two (9-7); however, three unanswered provided space for the Bearcats. Lander headed into the last five points up by four but the Royals found their momentum battling back to make it a 22-21 game. Lander however closed the set out off an attacking error from Queens.

Despite both teams finding strings of points in the opening parts of the set, the game settled towards the middle as Lander took a slight lead of 11-10. After an error put the ball in Cochran's hand for the serve, Queens picked up six unanswered to make it an 18-12 game. Lander found two more points but Queens had the rest of the set taking a 7-0 run.

It was a strong 5-1 start for the Royals but Lander quickly evened the game back out with a four point run. The two teams stayed close as Queens held a slight lead throughout the game. They would come within one point of the set battling to take the lead over the Bearcats. The last point would not fall for Queens as three strong Lander kills forced the set to go into extra points before the Bearcats added three more points for the win.

Queens again broke out first going up 5-1 in the set but like before Lander would equal before both teams fought evenly for the middle portion of the set. Queens held a slight lead of 20-17 towards the end of the match but Lander battled to tie at 25-25. They would take the next two points to claim the win.

The team will play at Brevard College on September 8th for their first conference match of the year. Match time is set for 7 p.m.
