MARS HILL, N.C.- The Queens University of Charlotte volleyball team secured a 3-0 score against Mars Hill on Saturday, September 24, 2016. The three set win saw the Royals grab the match with a 25-17, 27-25, 25-13 score to move to 8-3 overall and 5-1 in the South Atlantic Conference. Mars Hill dropped to 1-9 on the season and 0-7 within the conference.
The Royals continued to show strong serving skills as the landed five service aces in the match. The team additional tabbed nine blocks against the Lions two.
Jessica Raines led the team offensively putting up 10 kills while adding four blocks to tie
Julia Forbes for the highest blocking total in the match.
Megan Mancini led the team with three service aces to give her 11 on the season. She also secured 25 digs while
Sydney Kunz led the team in assists with 35.
Mary Kate Griffin led the Lions in kills with eight in the match. Rebecca Butler would follow with seven kills in addition to nine digs. Sara Fahrenbrook secured 15 assists for the team.
Queens found an 8-1 run in the first set to pull away from Mars Hill to take a 16-12 lead after an evenly played start. The Lions grabbed the next two points to tighten the gap but Queens put up four unanswered points to move back out. The Royal held the lead throughout the remainder of the set.
Mars Hill bounced back in the second taking six unanswered to make it a 6-2 game. It would take the Royals some time but they eventually caught the Lions at 17-17. The two teams would put together small strings of points but the set sat even at 25-25. A solo block from
Meredith Jones gave the Royals their second point in a row to make it two sets in their favor.
With the momentum from the last set, Queens rallied for a 12-2 start giving them a strong advantage in the last set. Mars Hill regained composure but the Royals' lead was too much to overcome as the team took the match off a 25-13 score.
Queens will head to Carson-Newman on September 30
th, to play a 7 p.m., match against the Eagles.
