JEFFERSON CITY, Tenn. - Â The Queens University of Charlotte volleyball team tabbed a four set victory over Carson-Newman on Friday, September 30, 2016. Queens went 25-17, 25-15, 23-25, 25-22 to claim the match and move to 9-3 overall and 6-1 in the South Atlantic Conference. Carson-Newman fell to 1-11 overall and 1-7 in league play.
Meredith Jones and
Rebecca Cochran tabbed double-doubles in the match. Jones led the team in both kills, with 19, and digs, with 17, while Cochran added 11 kills and 12 digs to the team's tally.
Sydney Kunz led the team in assists, blocks, and service aces. She would have 40 assists while tying with
Jessica Raines at five blocks and
Megan Mancini with a pair of service aces.
Abbie McFalane led the Eagles with 10 kills. Anna Patton had four blocks and 27 assists for the night. Taylor Lowe led the team on defense with 29 digs.
The first break in the match happened with a six point run from the Royals to take a 15-9 lead in the first set. Queens continued to push eventually taking an eight point gap over the home team to make it a 23-15 game. The Royals secured the set off a service ace from Mancini.
With an early lead of 8-4, Queens gained control of the second set. The Royals maintained the lead for the remainder of the game, stringing together points to eventually top the Eagles by 10.
Battling to stay in the match, Carson-Newman jumped out to an early lead. Queens rallied to eventually tie the set at 18-18. Despite the come-back from the team, Carson-Newman would force the match into extra sets.
With a 7-3 start, Queens held momentum in the fourth set of the night. Carson-Newman evened the score a 7-7 and would keep close for the rest of the match. Both teams put together strings but neither was able to find a breakout run as the game sat at 21-21. Queens tabbed two to move ahead 23-21 but the Eagles responded to pull back within one. An error off the Carson-Newman's side moved Queens into match point which Cochran took for the win. Â
Queens will travel to Lincoln Memorial tomorrow for a conference road game. The match is set to begin at 2 p.m.
