CHARLOTTE, N.C.- The Queens University of Charlotte volleyball team hustled through four sets for a 25-20, 21-25, 25-21, 25-19 win over the Patriots of Francis Marion University for the second time this year
on Tuesday, September 20, 2016. With the victory, Queens moves to a 6-3 overall record while Francis Marion drops to 6-5 overall.
Rebecca Cochran and
Meredith Jones both pulled out with 14 kills to lead the Royals to victory, while
Sydney Kunz grabbed a 34 assists to lead the group.
Megan Mancini led the team in service aces helping the Royals reach 11 in the match as she contributed four.
The Patriots' Caroline Boone led her team with 15 kills for the night while her teammate Carrie McGinnis captured 40 assists. Shelbi Meek tabbed 27 digs for the team.
The first set was highly contested with some dominate blocks from
Alex Thompson and Cochran. The Royals set out with an early lead of 8-2 before the first timeout was called and never looked back. The Patriots just could not seem to find their rhythm against the Royals as Queens captured the first win of the four sets.
The Patriots took their first lead of the night early in the second set with a 3-0 run over the Royals for a score of 4-1. Queens fought to play stay within striking distance but was never able to overcome the deficit.  In what was a point for point battle between the teams,
Hannah Lewis and Cochran put up big kills against the Patriots to keep the game tied for 10 alternating points. Francis Marion held the lead and took the win with Shelbi Meek tallying a kill to secure the set. Â
Showing no mercy after halftime, the Royals would come out and put up a 5-0 run to start the set. Queens continued their statement by securing a 16-9 lead before the Patriots would call a timeout to try and regain their focus. A massive kill by Jones secured the win in the third set at 25-21.
In the fourth and final set, the Patriots took a huge lead starting off 9-1 against the Royals. Queens battled to reclaim the set off an error and brought the score to 12-11. As the Royals continued to fight a serve ace by Mancini secured the win for Queens.
Queens will be back in action on Friday September 23, 2016, at 7 p.m., as they travel to Greenville, Tenn., to take on the Pioneers of Tusculum College.
