GREENEVILLE, Tenn.- The Queens University of Charlotte volleyball team took a come-from-behind victory on Friday, September 23, 2016, after falling behind 2-0 early in the match to Tusculum. The Royals rallied to take the last three sets to claim the match and move to a 7-3 overall record and a 4-1 conference record. Tusculum would fall to 5-4 overall and 2-3 in league play with the 20-25, 19-25, 25-13, 25-17, 15-10 loss.
After trailing in the first two sets, the Royals were forced to find a momentum shift to keep Tusculum from claiming a third game. The shift started with a small gap over the Pioneers in the opening points of the third set. Queens soon took a 7-1 run that pushed the Royals into a 14-9 lead. Tusculum remained close trailing by just two at 15-13 but Queens closed the set with 10 unanswered points.
The Royals took another five unanswered points to start the fourth set, with
Mallory Swarts landing two service aces, before the Pioneers could get on the board. Tusculum found five back-to-back scoring plays to even the match at 8-8. Queens slowly started to break away from the Pioneers but Tusculum grabbed a point to stay within three at 20-17. Three kills from
Meredith Jones and a service ace from
Sydney Kunz aided a 5-0 run that tied the match at two sets apiece.
Again Queens started strong as they battled through the final set but Tusculum fought back to tie at 5-5. The Royals saw a four point lead at 9-5 as
Rebecca Cochran found a kill. She would have two more before the match was over. Jones added two kills to the end of the game including the match winner to make the set 15-10.
Jones led the night with 18 kills and 14 digs. Cochran also had a double-double with 13 kills and 15 digs. In addition to her two back-to-back service aces in set four, Swarts found another ace in third set to make it three for the night. Kunz led the team in assists with 44 while
Megan Mancini tabbed 23 digs and six assists.
The Pioneers saw Cassie Born and Sarah Bouley equal at 12 kills apiece to lead the Tusculum offense. Shannon Murphy had 24 assists while Melissa Mazur tabbed 20 digs followed by Born who had 18 digs.
Queens continues their weekend on the road as they play Mars Hill tomorrow at 2 p.m.
