Brevard, N.C. – In a South Atlantic Conference championship match, the Queens University of Charlotte men's tennis team (14-3) found a third set, tiebreak win to clinch the conference title over the Wolves of Newberry (20-6) on Sunday, April 24, 2016. Queens would walk away from the match with the victory after freshman,
Giovanni Setti saw his No. 5 singles court to a 7-5, 4-6, 7-6 (7-2) score to take the team's fifth point of the day, uprooting the Wolves 5-4.
Per-Erik Soler would claim the tournament's Most Outstanding Player Award. Additionally, the win would be the program's first since 2011 when the Royals claimed the Conference Carolinas Tournament over Limestone.
Newberry held the upper hand coming out of doubles with a one point lead, taking the points on courts two and three, but not before
Per-Erik Soler and
Andor Vas tallied an 8-4 win in the top flight.
Soler tabbed the team's second point after leveling the score with a 6-3, 6-2 win in the No. 1 singles spot.
Jules Athalis would secure court two with a 6-4, 6-0 score but Newberry responded with a win on court three to keep the match tied. The Wolves would soon after find a win in the No. 4 spot to move to a 4-3 lead.
Nearing the conclusion of the match,
Ole-Jacob Meum rallied for a 7-6 (7-5) first set victory followed by a 6-2 second set win to put the attention on court five for the deciding point.
After splitting the first two sets, Setti tabbed a 4-1 start before Newberry's Angel Pizarro would battle back to take the lead at 5-4. The two would trade games with Setti forcing the tiebreak at 6-6 set score. Switching sides with a 5-1 lead, Queens found their victory just two points later with Setti claiming the tiebreak at 7-2.
Queens earns the automatic qualifier into the Southeast Regional NCAA Tournament with the win.
