Box ScoreCharlotte, N.C. – The Queens University of Charlotte men's tennis team saw an 8-1 defeat of Anderson University on Sunday, February 28, 2016. Queens would keep their undefeated record in South Atlantic Conference play, advancing to a 3-0 record with the home court win while Anderson dropped to 3-1. Queens improved to 5-1 overall as Anderson took a 5-2 overall record.
"I was pleased with our effort today," said Head Coach
Billy Boykin. "We have respect for the Anderson program. They have a dangerous team and we knew coming into the match that we'd need a complete team effort. We got off to a quick start in doubles play and never really lost our focus from there. Winning all three doubles matches gave us a big lift going into singles play. We competed hard on every court."
A strong start contributed to the team's success as Queens found three early points with the doubles matches.
Jules Athalis and
Giovanni Setti claimed the first point of the day with a defeat of the No. 2 doubles pair for Anderson, Paul Michael Calhoun and Inaki Irberri. The No. 14-ranked pair of
Per-Erik Soler and
Andor Vas captured a 8-3 score on court one against Aljaz Cajzek and Mateo Rivas as Jorden Owens and
Will Roberson shutout Anderson with a 8-4 win on court three against Juan Carracedo and Drew Mostellar.
In singles, Soler landed the team's first point going 6-1, 6-1 against Cajzek on court one. Vas claimed the deciding point going 6-4, 6-2 against Calhoun for the No. 3 singles court. Athalis and Setti tallied wins on court two and four, respectively. Athalis saw equaling sets of 6-3 while Setti went 6-0, 6-3 for his win.
Ole-Jacob Meum took the last point for the Royals seeing his match into three sets to claim a 6-1, 5-7, 10-4 win on the sixth court.
