CHARLOTTE, N.C. – The Queens University of Charlotte men's basketball team traveled across town for a Queens City showdown with Johnson C. Smith University this evening, winning 89-83 over the Golden Bulls. The Royals move to 6-0 on the year with the nonconference win, while Johnson C. Smith falls to 2-4 on the year.
After the Golden Bulls jumped out to a 12-4 lead early, Queens responded with a 14-4 run to take an 18:16 lead with 10:27 to play. Johnson C. Smith's Christian Williams knotted the game at 18-18 on the next play, but a dunk from
Daniel Camps of Queens returned the lead to the Royals for the remainder of half. Queens went on to take a 45-39 lead at the break after leading by as much as nine on a few occasions.
The Royals led the entire second half and saw their largest lead of the night on a three-pointer from
Ike Agusi with 12:24 to play that put Queens in front 67-54. Johnson C. Smith cut the margin to four, 84-80, with 39 seconds to play, but the Royals held off their late comeback attempt to collect their first road win of the year.
Camps led the Royals with 18 points and 12 rebounds for his third double-double of the season.
Jalin Alexander and
Mike Davis each added 17 points, while
Todd Withers totaled 13 points and seven rebounds.
Ike Agusi chipped in with 10 points.
Johnson C. Smith was led by Gabon Williams who scored 20 points. Robert Davis added 19 points, and Malik Ford scored 16 points. Cayse Minor added 15 points.
Queens will remain on the road for their next game, traveling to Dahlonega, Ga., to face the University of North Georgia. Tip-off is set for 7 p.m.
