CHARLOTTE, N.C. – The Queens University of Charlotte men's basketball team opened South Atlantic Conference play this evening against Newberry College, winning 104-86 over the Wolves. The 104 points was a new season-high for Queens as they improved to 5-0 on the year and 1-0 in the league. The Wolves open league play at 0-1 and move to 3-2 on the year.
Queens was led by
Mike Davis who scored a season-high 29 points on 11-of-18 shooting. Davis connected on 7-of-13 from behind the three-point arc as well. In addition, he totaled five assists, four rebounds and three steals.
Jalin Alexander added 14 points after shooting 50-percent from the three, and both
Daniel Camps and
Darryl White added 13 points each. Camps also pulled down 10 rebounds for his second double-double of the year, while White recorded eight rebounds.
Ike Agusi added 12 points and seven assists, and
Jared Hendryx totaled seven rebounds and five blocks.
An early 10-0 run would give the Royals a 15-3 lead just under four minutes into tonight's game, but three-point shooting from the Wolves allowed them to hang around as they pulled within one, 29-28, with 7:37 to play in the half. Queens responded with a 17-3 spurt that put them ahead 15 with 3:04 to play, and they would go on to take a 54-41 lead at the break.
In the second half, the Wolves closed the gap to 11 with 15:09 to play, but that was as close as they would get as hot shooting from Davis and a number of fastbreak opportunities helped Queens increase their lead to as much as 32 points, 98-66, before the final horn sounded.
Queens dominated play in the paint today, outscoring the Wolves 44-12. The Royals also scored 28 fastbreak points.
James Stepp led the Wolves with 27 points, while Gerald Evans added 16 points.
Queens will have their first road game on Saturday, November 26 across town at Johnson C. Smith University. Last season, the Royals defeated the Golden Bulls, 87-77.
