CHARLOTTE, N.C. – The Queens University of Charlotte men's basketball team welcomed students from Sedgefield Elementary and Myers Park Traditional School to Curry Arena for a noon tip-off game against Johnson & Wales University today, winning 92-50 over the Wildcats. The win helps the Royals improve to 3-0 on the year, while the Wildcats drop to 2-2 on the season.
Shooting 60-percent from the floor, the Royals were able to build a 52-24 lead by the time the halftime break rolled around. After Queens started the game with an 8-0 run, the Wildcats closed the gap to three, 11-8, with 15:59 to play. The Royals answered scoring 20 consecutive points to move ahead 31-8 with 10:20 left in the half, and they would never look back. Queens would see their largest lead of the period, 52-22, on a jumper from
Tate Small with 34 seconds left in the half.
Queens continued their domination over Johnson & Wales in the second half, extending their lead to as much as 46 points, 78-32, on a layup from
Jon Curtis which capped a 16-0 run.
The Royals shot 57.4-percent from the floor this afternoon, while holding the Wildcats to just 33.9-percent shooting. The Royals also shot 44-percent from three-point land with
Josh Van Weezep leading the way after knocking down 3-of-4.
Darryl White led the Royals in scoring with 14 points, while
Daniel Camps and
Todd Withers followed with 12 and 10 points, respectively. Additionally, the Royals outrebounded the Wildcats, 44-25, with Camps and White each pulling down seven boards apiece to lead Queens.
Johnson & Wales was led by Deion Gilchrist who totaled 15 points, while Rickey Porter added 14 points.
Queens will remain at home for their next game on Friday, November 17 when they host Lees-McRae College at 7 p.m. in Curry Arena.
