Queens Takes Care of Lions at Home

CHARLOTTE, N.C. –The Queens University of Charlotte volleyball team defeated Mars Hill University at home this afternoon in three sets of play (25-16, 25-19, 25-21). The win completes the home and home sweep of the Lions by Queens with the Royals not dropping a single set to Mars Hill this year. Queens improves to 15-5 on the year and 12-3 in South Atlantic Conference play with the victory, while the Lions drop to 5-11 in the league and 6-17 on the year.

Rebecca Cochran led the Royals this afternoon on the attack with 11 kills and a .321 hitting percentage. Jessica Raines and Meredith Jones followed, adding seven and six kills, respectively. Sydney Kunz totaled 31 assists and also led in blocks with three. On the defense, Jones led with 15 digs and Megan Mancini added 14.

After seeing four ties early in the first set, the Royals found their rhythm stringing together a few short runs before pushing eight points in a row for a 19-7 lead. The Lions found three points in a row to respond after their drought, but an attack error by the visitors followed by a kill from Alex Thompson would put the Royals ahead 21-10. The two teams then traded points which worked in the Royal's favor as they went on to take the set 25-16.

The second set was played more closely as the Royals found themselves trailing before a three point swing put them on top, 18-16. Three ties would follow before a five point push at the close gave Queens the 25-19 win.

Queens found themselves trailing again in the final set, but they would overcome the deficit with an 8-0 run to move ahead 23-18. The Lions tried to slow the attack and extend the match to four sets, but the Royals stayed persistent closing with a pair of kills to secure the sweep of the Lions.

Queens will be on the road for their next match at Coker on Tuesday, November 1 at 6 p.m. The Royals pulled out a five set win over the Cobras at home earlier in the season.
