Royals Hold On To Beat Newberry In Fast Paced Battle

Box Score CHARLOTTE, N.C. – The #15 Queens University of Charlotte Men's Basketball team (16-2, 10-2 SAC) outlasted the visiting Newberry Wolves (11-8, 6-7 SAC) in an intense back-and-forth game that resulted in a 92-87 victory for the Royals on Wednesday, January 27th, 2016.
 
The Royals continued to have the hot shooting hand as they knocked down 52.6 percent of their shots in the game. Queens was able to make it to the free throw line 39 times in the game, knocking down 26 of them. Newberry attempted 38 three pointers in the game, but were only able to connect on 10 of them.
 
Sean Morgan scored a game-high 29 points on 11-of-14 shooting from the field and 7-of-10 shooting from the free throw line. Morgan also added seven rebounds and three blocks in the game. Marquis Rankin also had a solid night on the court as he added 22 points on 8-of-15 shooting.
 
Queens jumped out to an early lead in the game as they held a 15-5 lead following a made free throw from Morgan with 14:11 to go in the first half. Minutes later, Newberry would go on an 11-2 run that was capped by a three pointer made by Mason Spease to give the Wolves a 24-22 lead with just under nine minutes to play in the first half. Both teams would be entrenched in a back-and-forth battle for the remainder of the half, as the teams would be tied at 40 apiece with 2:40 remaining in the first half. The Royals grabbed back a sizeable lead, 49-42, following a Morgan layup, but Newberry's Brandon Taylor would make a three pointer near the end of the half to make the score 49-46 going into the break.
 
Just as it happened in the first half, the pace of the game in the second half continued to remain fast paced, if not faster. Newberry worked to grab a 68-64 lead following a free throw by Xavier Holmes with just over ten minutes to play in the game. The Royals would respond by going on a 12-2 run minutes later that would vault them to a 78-74 lead following an old-fashioned three point play by Morgan with 6:05 to go in the game. With just over three minutes to go in the game, the Royals and Wolves were deadlocked at 81-81. Queens was able to clinch the game in the final two minutes as Rob Lewis stopped and popped a midrange jumper and a three pointer as the shot clock expired on back-to-back possessions to give the Royals an 89-83 lead that they would hold onto from there as they would defeat the upset minded Wolves 92-87.
 
Newberry was led by Xavier Holmes had a double double in the game, as he scored 16 points and 10 rebounds. The sharpshooting Brandon Taylor was 4-of-5 from three-point range as he added 14 points for the Wolves.
 
The Royals will play their third game this week on Saturday, January 30th, as they travel to Carson Newman to play the Eagles at 4:00 p.m.
