Royals Shake Off Rust Following Winter Storm, Sneak By Tornados

Box Score CHARLOTTE, N.C. – The Ninth Ranked Queens University of Charlotte Men's Basketball team (15-2, 9-2 SAC) started off slow, but finally found their groove in the second half as they snuck by the Brevard Tornados (2-14, 1-9 SAC) 90-82 on Monday, January 25th, 2016.

The Royals shot 55 percent from the field in the game, which included going 18-of-24 in the second half.  Queens had twice as many rebounds as the Tornados as they outrebounded them 42-21. Of those 42 rebounds, 18 of them were offensive rebounds, leading to 20 second chance points in the game.

All five starters scored in double digits for the Royals, led by Sean Morgan's 22 points. Morgan was 10-of-14 from the field and added in four rebounds and two assists. Rob Lewis ended the night with 18 points followed by Todd Withers who grabbed a double double with his 17 points, 10 rebound night.

Brevard grabbed control of the game from the start as they got out to a 18-8 lead following a Stevie Williams layup only five minutes into the game. The Royals worked to cut the lead down to two points, 28-26, following an old-fashioned three point play by Daniel Camps with 7:18 remaining in the first half. Brevard would go on a 5-0 run to increase the lead back to seven points, but the Royals would only be down by three points at halftime, 41-38, following Marquis Rankin's layup with 35 seconds.

Queens started the second half on an 11-2 run, eight of which came courtesy of Lewis. In the process of the run, the Royals took the lead back for the first time since the opening moments of the game where they led 2-0. The Royals lead grew to the largest margin of the game, 13 points, as Camps poked the ball out and went coast-to-coast and slammed home a dunk to give them a 69-56 lead with just over ten minutes remaining in the game. Queens would be tested by Brevard once more as the lead was cut down to only five points, 82-77, with 2:03 remaining following a layup by Threatt. The Royals answered by scoring four straight points and hitting their free throws down the stretch to knock off the Tornados 90-82.

Brevard had 58 of their 82 points scored by two players, Demarcus Threatt and Charlotte native Miles Leathers. Leathers scored a game high 34 points on 12-of-14 shooting from the field and 8-of-14 shooting from the free throw line. Threatt added 24 points on 8-of-13 shooting.

The Royals have a quick turnaround as they play host to the Newberry Wolves on Wednesday, January 27th, with tip-off slated for 8:00 p.m.
