Box Score CHARLOTTE, N.C. – In the 82
nd minute, Queens University of Charlottes'
Diamond Russos was able to net this evening's game-winner over UNC-Pembroke giving the Royals a 2-1 victory. The win helps Queens improve to 2-1 on the year, while the Braves drop to 0-3.
The Braves would strike first in the 12
th minute of play with a header from Jasmine Senecal-Guzman off of a corner kick from Mackenzie Wright. However, the Royals soon equalized the match when junior midfielder
Caitlyn Rodrigues sent a through ball to freshman forward
Charlotte Ring. Ring was able take a sliding shot that snuck into the right corner of the net just past UNCP keeper, Janae Aiken, in the 24
th minute.
The 1-1 tie would hold until the 83
rd minute of action when Russos, a senior midfielder, scored the game-winner off of a corner kick from junior defender
Ashley Osiecki. Russos' header appeared to have been turned away by a Braves player in the net, but because it had crossed the goal line before being deflected the Royals were awarded the goal on the play.
The Royals outshot the Braves 23-9 with seven shots coming from
Alana Jefferson. However, UNCP edged Queens 7-6 in shots on goal.
Tori Danchak took the win in goal after totaling six saves, while UNCP's Aiken recorded four saves.
Tonight marked the fifth time that the Royals and the Braves have met, and the first time that Queens has walked away victorious.
Queens is on the road this weekend beginning with a game against Clayton State University on Friday evening at 7 p.m.
