Box Score 2 Charlotte, N.C.- Battling all day, Queens University of Charlotte volleyball took two matches into extra sets on Saturday, September 5, 2015 as the team faced the 4-0 Georgia Regents Jaguars and the 2-2 King Tornado. The Georgia Regents match went into five sets as the Royals took the first two 25-22, 26-24, however the Jaguars bounced back going 25-15, 25-20, 18-16 for the win. The Royals again took the first set against King but the Tornado captured a 21-25, 25-20, 25-18, 25-21 victory.
The Royals opened the day against a strong Georgia Regents team. Despite trailing for the middle portion of the game, Queens capped the first set going 25-22. It was a 4-0 run that would give them the set with
Megan Mancini taking the final kill.
Inspired from the first set, the Royals built throughout the game with their largest lead coming at 19-12. However, the Jaguars would make up ground, tying the game at 22-22. Queens took two back-to-back kills to bring about game point but Georgia Regents would echo for a 25-24 Queens score. In a long rally,
Taylor Henry and
Jessica Raines blocked Kali Boatwright's attack giving the Royals the game.
A few mishaps in game three put the Jaguars ahead 13-8 as the momentum shifted to Georgia Regents. Royals were forced to use a timeout when Jaguars took a 17-11 lead. It would be a gap the team would be unable to overcome as the Royals fell 25-15
Shaking off the previous set, the two teams stay tight throughout the earlier parts of the game with Queens seeing a 14-10 lead half way through the set. Five unanswered Jaguars' points gave Georgia Regents the go-ahead at 16-15. The two teams would tie at 18-18 before Georgia Regents made another push to take a 5-0 run that would put them out of reach.
All hinged on the deciding match, the two teams played equal with as neither team found a breakout moment.
Rebecca Cochran tied the game for the Royals at 16-16 but Rachel Windle took a pair of kills to claim the match.
Meredith Jones continued her strong weekend taking 14 kills and four services aces, and eight digs. Cochran would have 12 kills, two aces, and six digs as
Jessica Raines added 13 more kills to the day.
Windle led the Jaguars taking 12 kills in the match. Cat DeSilvester led the team in digs tallying 19.
Both Queens and King would enter their second match of the day looking to overcome a loss as the Tornado dropped 3-0 to Lander in their opening Saturday match. However, Queens was the first to regain their strength as the Royals took an earlier 6-3 lead. King found their composer, battling back to a 10-10 game. The two would stay close up until the Royal erupted into a 5-1 run that was capped by
Meredith Jones and
Elizabeth Bialkowski taking kills for the set.
Game two searched for a front runner up until the end, as both teams played equal.
Kelsey McCormick found the King court to bring the Royal within one point at 21-20. However, three errors by the Royals led to match point with Ashton Beckner capitalizing with a strong attack.
Haunted by the game before, Queens came out slow for set four allowing King to jump out to a huge 10-3 lead. They would be unable to make up ground despite their effort. The team would concede the match 25-18.
Queens would be the team to find the first gap in the game taking five unanswered for a 12-7 lead. King would mirror, however, to meet the Royals at 12-12. The deciding run would conclude the game as the two teams stayed evenly spread until a 21-21 score. King put forth the next four points with Queens unable to answer ending the game at 25-21.
The offense would be led in the second game by Raines who found nine kills to add to three blocks. Cochran and Jones would tie for second with eight kills apiece. Cochran would also have 17 digs to lead the team. Jones would take second in digs with 14.
Ashleigh Manke and Sarah Collins both had 13 kills to top the Tornado. Amy Serowski found 16 digs and Lauren Wlilloughby 15 digs to aid their team.
The Royals look next to conference play heading to Anderson, S.C. on September 11. The Friday match is scheduled to begin at 7 p.m.
