Box Score Charlotte, N.C. – The Queens University of Charlotte volleyball team lost to Tusculum College on Saturday, September 26, 2015, as the match progressed into five sets with the Pioneers going 26-24, 13-25, 21-25, 25-18, 15-9. The loss moves Queens to a 4-7 overall record and 3-4 record in the South Atlantic Conference. For the Pioneers, the win advances them 6-4 overall record and 4-3 SAC conference record. The Royals would have 61 kills in the match for one of their highest match performances all season.
The match started off with a service ace from
Sydney Kunz which built into a 10-4 lead for the team, forcing the Pioneers to burn a timeout. The timeout proved helpful as Tusculum would so rattle off a 7-1 run to tie the game at 11-11. The two teams would remain close tying seven more times on their way to a 24-24 score. However, two back-to-back attacking errors by Royals would give Tusculum the win.
In the second set, the Royals held the lead for the majority of time with Tusculum only equaling the score on three occasion. All three tying points fell early in the set as
Kelsey McCormick separated the teams for good out of a 4-4 tie as the Royals captured the set.
Although Tusculum scored the first two points in the third set, they could not keep the momentum throughout. With a service error from the Pioneers' Sabrina Schleuger, Queens seized control of the ball, working their way to a 4-2 lead. An attacking error by
Meredith Jones would allow Tusculum to take the lead (5-4) until the teams tied again at 16-16. The game equaled one last time at 20-20 with Queens rising victorious, going 5-1 in the final points.
Royals were forced to use an early timeout in the fourth set as Tusculum tabbed a 6-3 score. Unable to regather themselves, Tusculum soon found a seven point lead at 15-8 over the home team as Queens never recovered in the set.
In the final set the two teams fought in the opening points to claim the match. Tying at 7-7, a kill by Danae Stauffer would give Tusculum the momentum to remain in the lead until Kaily Weiss's kill gave them the match win.
As a team, the Royals tallied nine service ace with Jones responsible for four aces. Jones would lead in kills for the match tying
Jessica Raines with 13 kills apiece.
Rebecca Cochran took the next spot on the stat line, adding 12 kills of her own to the Queens' offense. Kunz would walk away with 29 assists and Megan Mancici would walk away with 24 digs.
Schleuger led the Pioneers with 12 kills and nine digs. Sarah Bouley was right behind with 11 kills and two service aces. The Pioneers found eight aces of their own for the night. Hannah Berling would hold top in assists, tallying 32 for the team.
The Royals take the road on Friday, October 2, 2015, to play Coker College in Hartsville, S.C. at 7:00 p.m.
