Box Score Salisbury, N.C.- The Queens University of Charlotte volleyball team took their first road win against Catawba College on Tuesday, September 22, 2015. The Royals won in four sets going 25-17, 25-21, 25-27, 25-17. The win advances Queens to a 3-6 overall record and 2-3 in the South Atlantic Conference. Catawba moves to a 5-7 overall record and 2-3 in the SAC.
In the first set, Catawba took the first three points but
Elizabeth Bialkowski found a kill for Queens to start the Royals off. The teams exchanged points with Catawba holding the upper hand meeting at a 14-14 score.
Annika Jones's service ace advanced the team from the tie and changed the momentum for the rest of the match, keeping the Royals in the lead to claim the game.
The second match started with the teams going point-for-point until
Meredith Jones's service ace set Queens in the lead at 6-5. From there, the Royals held control for most of the set, despite finding a tying point five times with the Indians. The final point came off a block from
Taylor Henry and
Jessica Raines to give Queens their win.
The third set was close, beginning with both teams trading points until the Indians found a three point lead with a block by Erin Morant (11-8). The two teams fought for the control but Catawba stayed ahead of Queens until 19-19 tie. The battle back for the Royals fell shy as two errors allowed Catawba to take the win for the set.
Queens started strong with a kill from
Jessica Raines in the last set.
Taylor Henry and
Rebecca Cochran would follow with kills allowing the Royals a 3-0 start as the team looked to shake off the prior game. Queens kept Catawba in the distance, driving through the set with a strong offensive presence. A final kill from Bialkowski ended the match, giving Queens their third win for the season.
Meredith Jones led the Royals with 13 kills, seven digs, and two service aces.
Jessica Raines was right behind with 12 kills.
Megan Mancini topped the team in digs, tallying 24 in the match while
Annika Jones tallied four service aces and 20 assists.
Alex Hopper would lead the Indians with nine kills. McKenzie Garrison would follow behind with eight kills and ten digs.
The Royals will take the court again on Friday, September 25, 2015, as they travel to Mars Hill University. The match is set for 7 p.m.
