Box Score CHARLOTTE, N.C. – The Queens University of Charlotte men's basketball team pulled out another close one tonight defeating Catawba College 77-75 in Curry Arena. The win improves Queens' record to 10-5 in South Atlantic Conference play and 13-8 on the year. The Indians fall to 9-12 on the year and 6-9 in the league.
After starting the game with the hot hand, the Royals started the second half cold as the Indians opened with a 14-2 run to take a 47-46 lead five minutes into play. Queens quickly regained control of the lead going ahead by four before the Indians knotted the game at 51-51 just before the under 12 media timeout.
After two more ties and three more lead changes, the Royals were able to take over and stretch the margin out to as much as eight thanks to a spark provided off the bench by
Ben Richter. However, the Indians didn't go down easily. In the final 2:50 they would score seven straight to take a 73-72 lead with 1:53 on the clock. Lewis, fouled after the Indians took a one point lead, would knock down the front end of the one-and-one to tie the game up for the eighth time of the night. After the Royals got a stop on the defensive end of the floor, the junior guard then took his man one-one-one to the hole for two points to put the Royals ahead for good.
Queens was led by Lewis who totaled 18 points and seven assists.
Marquis Rankin added 14 points and six assists, while
Jedarian Jackson chipped in with 11 points and seven rebounds.
Sean Morgan also totaled seven rebounds to go along with his eight points and four steals.
Though the Royals shot nearly 70 percent from the floor for much of the opening period, the Indians stuck close until a 9-0 run sparked by six straight points from Lewis put the home team ahead 42-29 with 4:06 to play. At the break, Queens led 44-33 after posting a 61.5 percent clip from the floor in the half. The Royals also shot 81.8 percent from the charity stripe.
Troy Warren of Catawba led all players on the floor with 25 points and 18 rebounds. KJ Arrington recorded 11 points and seven rebounds.
Queens is on the road Saturday at Brevard College to wrap the home-and-home series with the Tornados. The Royals took the first game by a score of 81-64.Tip-off is set for 4 p.m.
