Queens falls shy of Newberry

Box Score Charlotte, N.C. – Queens University of Charlotte women's basketball (5-19, 3-15 SAC) fell to the Wolves of Newberry College (5-13, 3-10 SAC) on Wednesday, February 18, 2015. Although the Royals took control of the second half, they were unable to overcome their first half deficit as Newberry took the game 53-49.

A slow build towards the end of the game brought the team back within four points before time expired. Coming out of a 17 point deficit, Queens started their climb at the 7:39 as Karleasha Thompson made a pair of free-throws. Carmen Richardson moments later followed with two free-throws of her own bringing the score to 49-36. Finally breaking within ten points, Sheridan Pressley took a basket to bring the clock under three minutes (51-43). With 1:10 remaining, Lacey Singletary found the layup and the foul to convert a three-point play. Her drive would give the team just five points to overcome. With time nearing the end, Pressley knocked down two from the line to give the team their closest score since first half, only trailing 52-48. However, Newberry's Samantha Creed rattled one off to put the Royals hopes at bay with seven seconds left on the clock. Richardson put up one last free-throw on the board for the final score.

Newberry took control of the first half, starting at the 13 minute mark, finding an 11 point run that could only be momentarily halted by Abby Pettit with an open look under the basket. The drive was not over for the Wolves taking another 10 unanswered off the floor. The Royals closed out the first half with Lacey Singletary breaking a seven minute dry-spell, as the team struggled to find their offensive presence.

Queens outscored Newberry 34-22 in the second half, doubling their first half production and holding the Wolves to just four points for the final eight minutes of play. Pettit led the Royals for most of the game, concluding her night with 10 points. Singletary secured 11 points while grabbing four blocks and seven rebounds. Pressley came out of half inspired taking all 11 of her points in the last 20 minutes.

Creed held 15 of Newberry's points to lead the floor as Jaya Schultz took down 10 points. The team had 55 field-goal attempts to the Royals 39.

Royals host their last home game against Carson-Newman on Saturday at 2 p.m. The team celebrates senior honoring Lacey Singletary, Abby Pettit, and Aileen Savino.
