Queens comeback falls short against Newberry

Box Score CHARLOTTE, N.C. – The Queens University of Charlotte men's basketball team welcomed the Wolves of Newberry College to Curry Arena this evening to wrap the South Atlantic Conference home-and-home series falling 90-85. The Royals now sit at 11-8 in the league and 14-11 on the year, while the Wolves improve to 17-8 overall and 11-8 in SAC play.
 
Trailing by as much as 16 points in the second half, Queens would put together a string of short runs to find themselves just down by five with 1:04 to play. A foul with 15 seconds to play sent Newberry's Gerald Evans to the line where he knocked down two to give his team a seven point advantage, 89-82. The Royals answered with a quick three from Rob Lewis to cut the lead to four with just 11 seconds to play, but were unable to get any closer as time ticked off the clock.
 
Both teams shot around 48 percent from the floor this evening with Newberry outscoring Queens 48-30 in the paint. However, Queens would take the battle under the glass outrebounding the Wolves 37-34.   
 
After leading by as much as seven points at the start of the game, the Royals found themselves trailing the Wolves 47-35 at the half due to a number of costly turnovers. The Royals finished the half with 12 turnovers to Newberry's four, and the Wolves were able to convert Queens' ball handling mishaps into 19 first half points.
 
Lewis led the Royals tonight scoring 23 points and dishing out five assists. Ben Richter followed with 12 points after shooting 4-of-6 from deep, and Darryl White totaled a career-high 11 points. The pair helped Queens' bench outscore Newberry's 33-28. Jared Hendryx finished with seven points, nine rebounds, two assists, three blocks, and a steal.
 
The Wolves saw five players reach double figure scoring with Xavier Holmes' 21 points leading the way. Demarkus Smith totaled 19 points, and Hamish Burns added 13 points. Evans and Mitch Riggs chipped in with 11 and 10 points, respectively.
 
The Royals will be back at home to celebrate Senior Day on Saturday at 4 p.m. They will face Carson-Newman College for the second time this season after winning 82-80 in the first match-up.
