Queens game with Mars Hill goes down to the wire

Box Score CHARLOTTE, N.C. – The Queens University of Charlotte men's basketball team fell 74-73 to Mars Hill University this evening in a game that went down to the wire. The Royals fall to 11-7 in South Atlantic Conference play and 14-10 on the year, while the Lions improve to 5-12 in the league and 10-14 on the season.

Trailing the Lions the entire second half of action, the Royals pulled within four of Mars Hill with just 51 seconds to play. After getting a stop on the defensive end, Queens' Rob Lewis was fouled while shooting a three and sent to the line where he knocked down 2-of-3 freebies to bring the home team within two of the Lions.

With time running out, the Royals were able to get another defensive stop allowing them to take what they thought would be the final shot of the regulation. Jedarian Jackson connected on a three-pointer from the left wing with 1.9 to play to put Queens ahead 73-72. It was the first time the Royals had held the lead since the 8:41 mark in the first.

Unfortunately for Queens, the lead would be short lived as the Royals got caught out of position on the defensive end allowing the Lions' Isaiah Cuthbertson to get an easy layin for the win.

Queens outscored Mars Hill 46-22 in the paint, and won the battle under the glass, 39-30.

After seeing their largest lead of the night in the first half when they held a 16-11 advantage with 11:05 on the clock, foul trouble put the Royals' big men on the bench allowing the Lions to take over. Mars Hill would build as much as a 14-point lead on the back of hot three-point shooting by Michael Carson. Queens trailed 41-31 at the break.

Sean Morgan led the Royals with 17 points and nine rebounds tonight, while Lewis added 14 points. Jared Hendryx totaled 13 points.

Carson led the Lions with 23 points after connecting on 7-of-10 from deep. Cuthbertson and Yeargin each scored 14 points, while Thomas Anderson added 10 points.

The Royals are back at home in Curry Arena on Wednesday night against Newberry College at 8 p.m. The Wolves took the first game by a score of 96-80.
