Box Score WINGATE, N.C. – The Queens University of Charlotte men's basketball team wrapped their home-and-home series with the Bulldogs of Wingate University this evening falling 75-74. Both teams now sit tied for second in the South Atlantic Conference at 11-6 in the league and 14-9 on the year.
In a very tightly contested game that went back and forth for the entire 40 minutes of action, the Royals found themselves holding a 74-73 lead following a made free-throw by
Rob Lewis with 1:37 to play. Queens'
Trey Ervin had tied the game at 73-73 on the Royals' previous possession with a three-pointer.
The Royals held the narrow lead until Wingate's Keith Griffin collected an offensive rebound and put it in the basket to give the Bulldogs a 75-74 lead with just 10 seconds to play. Queens, holding the final possession of the game, raced up the court for a chance to score for the win, but a turnover would prevent the Royals from getting a final shot off before the horn sounded.
The Royals and the Bulldogs matched each other's play in the paint tonight as both teams scored 36 points in the lane. Additionally, Queens outrebounded Wingate by just one board, 34-33.
Lewis led the Royals with 21 points, while
Marquis Rankin added 16 points.
Trey Ervin scored 10 points.
Sean Morgan and
Jedarian Jackson each pulled down seven rebounds apiece.
Wingate's Xavier Griffin led the Bulldogs with 17 points, while Zeriq Lolar and Anthanee Doyle added 11 and 10 points, respectively.
The Royals are back at home on Saturday to celebrate Homecoming. They will welcome Mars Hill University to Curry Arena for a 4 p.m. tip-off.
