Box Score Greenville, Tenn. – Despite dropping the first set, the Queens University of Charlotte volleyball team found three straight games to take the win over the Tusculum Pioneers. The Royals grabbed 13 service aces in the match to tie their second highest this season, as the team took a 22-25, 25-21, 25-15, 25-23 win. Queens moves to an 11-13 overall record while reaching .500 in conference with a 9-9 record. The Pioneers fell to 11-13 overall and move to an 8-10 South Atlantic Conference record.
Meredith Jones added six service aces to the team in addition to leading the Royals in kills with 21.
Megan Mancini added 20 more digs to her season total while
Annika Jones led the team in assists with 20.
The first set was close throughout the game as Tusculum was only able to find a three point gap along the way. The Royals met at 12-12, however three Queens' errors put the Pioneers at 15-12. Queens managed to hang close but Tusculum took the set.
Tusculum foun an early lead in Set 2 but the Royals battled back to move ahead by one point at 9-8. Queens managed a five point gap nearing the end of the set as they held a 21-15 lead over the Pioneers. Although Tusculum took a 4-0 run, it was stopped short as Queens managed a four point gap for the set.
An early launch from the Royals had Tusculum calling timeout with a Queens' lead of 8-3. Queens forced another Pioneer timeout at 13-5 but the team would not be stopped. The Royals took an 8-1 run to extend out to a 22-8 game over Tusculum with
Jessica Raines and
Alex Thompson combining for a block. The team topped the Pioneers by ten points to close out the set.
Queens took the first real run in the set to extend to a 13-8 lead. Although Tusculum would tie the game at 21-21, they would never take the lead from Queens. The Royals secured the match off an error from the Pioneers.
Tusculum was led by Rachel Garnett who tallied 12 kills. Hannah Berling totaled 39 assists for the Pioneers while Melissa Mazur took 14 digs.
The next match for the Royals will be senior day as the team hosts Coker College on November, 6, at 7 p.m.
