Box Score Charlotte, N.C. – After going into five sets, the Queens University of Charlotte volleyball team held on to grab the match against the Catawba College Indians 3-2. The match on Tuesday, October 27, 2015, saw the Royals take the win after going 25-16, 21-25, 25-12, 19-25, 15-8 to move to a 9-13 overall record and improve to a 7-9 South Atlantic Conference record. The loss for Catawba would move them to an 11-12 overall record and even their conference record at 8-8.
Although the match went into five sets, Queens showed dominance limiting the Indians to single digit kills in the first, third, and fifth sets.
Meredith Jones would tallying her second highest of the season in kills taking 18 in the match in addition to five blocks and two service aces. This was the fifth game in a row for
Megan Mancini finding a service ace. She landed five aces in the match against the Indians to add to her 17 digs.
Katie Schoenrock took a season high in digs with 18 in addition to taking a season high in kills with 14.
An 8-0 run was the difference in the first set as Queens came from behind at 13-11 to take a commanding 19-13 lead. Despite the break in the run from McKenzie Garrison, the Royals were immediately back in it as the team rattled off another five unanswered to move ahead by 10 points (24-14). M. Jones and
Taylor Henry combined on a block to give the team their first set win in the match.
Although the climb would not be nearly as rapid, Catawba found a 21-14 lead late in the second set to give them the upper hand. The Royals slowly started to chip away at the score only to run out of space when a kill from Bri Howard stopped the Queens pursuit at 25-21.
A slight advantage fell to the Royals early in set three as Catawba called their second timeout trailing 14-8 after three errors, including a Schoenrock service ace, fell against the Indians. Queens responded with three more points to put the team ahead by nine with a 17-8 score. From there, the Royals held the Indians to just three points as the team worked their way through the set with Schoenrock finding a closing pair of kills.
Despite an early run by Catawba, the Royals managed to even the score at 7-7. The two teams stayed close until Catawba found five unanswered points to gain a slight margin. The Indians' run pulled momentum to the other side as Catawba created a slow build to take the set.
An immediate jump to a 7-2 score had Queens sitting comfortably in the deciding set. The Royals would move into match point with a 14-5 lead but Catawba was not done as the team found three points to soften the gap. Again closing out a set, Schoenrock found the Catawba court off a pass from
Annika Jones to claim the Royals' victory.
The Indians would have two players tie in kills as McKenzie Garrison and Alex Hopper both took 10 for the stat line. Rachel Stanford led the team in assists as she tallied 23 while Evan Schultz and Garrison topped the team with 13 digs apiece.
The Royals will be back home this Friday as the team hosts Mars Hill at 7 p.m.
