Box Score Charlotte, N.C. – The Queens University of Charlotte volleyball team (5-10, 4-7 SAC) topped Lenoir-Rhyne (9-5, 8-2 SAC) on Saturday, October 10, 2015, grabbing three of four sets as the team went 25-22, 23-25, 25-16, 25-23. Queens gave Lenoir-Rhyne their second conference loss of the year as the Bears move to a 9-5 overall record and 8-2 in the South Atlantic Conference. The Royals move to a 5-10 overall record and 4-7 in conference.
For the third time this season, Queens had 10 service aces with
Kelsey McCormick leading the charge with five service aces. Queens led the day in blocks with ten for the team as
Taylor Henry and
Elizabeth Bialkowski took part in five blocks apiece. Henry would move to first in the South Atlantic Conference for blocks per set, averaging 1.34.
Sydney Kunz topped the team in assists with 26 and
Meredith Jones led the team in kills with 12.
Brooke Redmond topped the day with 22 kills for the Bears. She would mirror that with 22 digs, to again lead the team. Briana Gottberg led the team with 25 assist in addition to also grabbing an ace.
The first set saw comparable runs from both teams with no team stringing together more than four points at a time. However, Queens found a 6-1 run to close the set in their favor as
Rebecca Cochran and
Annika Jones took the last two kills for the team's victory.
Set 2 had the Royals lead early at 10-5, but the Bears would soon be back in the game. The two teams stayed even meeting at 21-21. Although, Queens took two points to move closer to taking the set, Lenoir-Rhyne capitalized off of two blocking errors and an ace to even the match at a set apiece.
The Royals went up early in the third set to see a 7-2 score forcing Lenoir-Rhyne to burn a timeout. They would be unable to recover as Queens found a 7-1 run to dominantly claim the set.
With momentum from the prior set, Queens took an early 5-0 lead but the Bears battled back to meet at 9-9. Building towards the end of the match, the Royals took six unanswered to give them the upper hand at 21-19, capping the run with a huge block from Henry and
Jessica Raines. The team would go on to close the set 25-23 for the win.
Queens will travel to Francis Marion on Tuesday, October 13, to face the Patriots at 7 p.m. that night.
