Rob Lewis led the Royals to victory this evening over Coker College scoring 23 points on 7-of-11 shooting. Queens University of Charlotte improved to 8-5 on the year and 5-2 in South Atlantic Conference play after picking up the 78-53 win. The Cobras fall to 4-7 on the year and 3-4 in the league.
In addition to scoring 23 points, Lewis dished out four assists and tallied four rebounds, two blocks and two steals. Junior forward
Sean Morgan totaled 16 points and 11 rebounds for his second straight double-double. He has tallied three on the year. Junior guard
Marquis Rankin added 10 points, while
Jedarian Jackson recorded nine points and four rebounds.
The Royals got off to a hot start this evening beginning the game with an 8-0 run, and forcing a timeout by the Cobras with 16:02 to play. The Cobras scored their first bucket of the game at 15:55 when Errick Bethel knocked down a jumper. They would get within eight of the Royals at 12:39, 13-5, but would not see another point until Bethel found a basket at 8:47. By that time Queens had extended its lead to as much as 14 points. At the break, the Royals held a 39-28 lead.
Queens began the second half on fire knocking down three consecutive shots from behind the three-point line to increase their lead to 18, 48-30, and force another Coker timeout just 1:40 into action. A layup and a fast-break dunk from
Jared Hendryx put the Royals ahead 21, 52-31, before the under 16 media, and they would not let the Cobras get within 10 from that point on in the game. Queens saw its largest lead of the night at 3:16 when a jumper from Lewis put the home team ahead 75-47.
Queens shot 60.4 percent from the floor this evening connecting on 29-of-48 attempts while holding Coker to just 31.3 percent shooting on 15-of-48 attempts. The Royals also outscored the Cobras 41-18 in the paint, and won the battle under the glass, 33-29.
Coker was led by Bethel who scored 14 points, eight of which came from the foul line. Aubrey Daniel added 10 points.
The Royals are on the road this Saturday heading to Carson-Newman College to take on the Eagles. Last season the Royals split the home-and-home series with the Eagles. Tip-off is set for 4 p.m.
