Box Score CHARLOTTE, N.C. – Queens University of Charlotte defeated Tusculum College by a score of 73-71 this afternoon to improve their South Atlantic Conference record to 9-5. The Pioneers fall to 4-10 in the league and 4-15 on the year with the loss.
Queens, 12-8 on the year, had to hold off a late comeback by the Pioneers to pull out today's win as Tusculum's Zach Davis and Cory Fagan knocked down back-to-back three-pointers to bring Tusculum within one, 72-71, of the Royals with four seconds on the clock. The Pioneers then fouled Queens'
Rob Lewis to send him to the line where he knocked down the front end of the one-and-one to give the home team a 73-71 lead.
With the final possession of the game, the Pioneers sent a ball down court on an inbound play that was intercepted by Queens'
Trey Ervin as the final horn sounded.
After trailing by one, 32-31, at the break, the Royals strung together a few good runs to grab their largest lead of the game at 8:22 when a fastbreak layup from Lewis put the home team ahead, 60-48. A 6-0 push by the Pioneers in the final three minutes would set up the opportunity for Davis and Fagan's threes to get them back into the game with time winding down.
The first half of today's game saw six ties and seven lead changes. Tusculum saw its largest lead of the day when a layup from Davis put the visiting Pioneers ahead of Queens by six, 22-16. Trailing by five with 3:48 to play, Queens'
Jared Hendryx and
Jedarian Jackson scored back-to-back buckets to give the game a 32-31 score at the break.
Sean Morgan led the Royals today recording 19 points and 13 rebounds for his sixth double-double of the season. Lewis and Hendryx each netted 10 points with Hendryx also recording a season-high six blocks. Marquis Ranked added nine points, five assists and four steals.
The Royals outscored Tusculum 43-24 in the paint, but lost the battle under the glass, 49-42.
Fagan led the Pioneers with 17 points, while Davis added 15 points and seven rebounds. Matt Showen (11 points, 14 rebounds) and Mounce (12 points, 10 rebounds) each recorded double-doubles.
The Royals are back home in Curry Arena on Wednesday night against Catawba College at 8 p.m. It will be the first of the home-and-home series between the two teams this season.
