Queens falls on the road to Newberry

Box Score NEWBERRY, S.C. – The Queens University of Charlotte men's basketball team fell 96-80 to the Newberry College Wolves this evening in South Atlantic Conference play. The two teams now sit tied in second place in the league with 8-5 records, and Queens holds an 11-8 record on the year. The Wolves improve to 14-5 after ending a four-game skid.

Sean Morgan led the Royals with 22 points on 9-of-12 shooting. He also pulled down six rebounds. Kendall Jones posted a new season-high scoring 18 points, while Rob Lewis totaled 14 points, five rebounds and six assists.

Following a layup by Queens' Jared Hendryx at 16:55 that tied the game at 6-6, the Wolves put together a 16-3 run to hold a 13-point lead at 10:15. The Royals, having gone scoreless for five minutes, would rely on back-to-back three-pointers from Lewis to breathe life into their offense at the midway point of the half.

Lewis' buckets fueled an 8-0 push that brought Queens back within in an arm's reach of the Wolves, and Jedarian Jackson connected on a three at 6:46 that closed the gap to two, 26-24. However, the Wolves outscored the Royals 6-1 in the final two minutes of the half to take an 11 point lead into the break.

After shooting 46.7 percent from the floor in the opening half, the Royals struggled to find their rhythm on the offensive end in the second connecting on just 15-of-39 shot attempts. Two straight baskets from Ben Richter would bring the Royals to within seven of the Wolves with 12:38 to play, but that was as close as Queens would get to Newberry in the period. A pair of free-throws at 1:13 would give the Wolves their largest lead of the night, 96-75, before the final horn sounded.

The Wolves saw six player reach double figure scoring tonight with Demarkus Smith's 20 points leading the way. James Stepp added 13 points, while Brandon Taylor, Vincent Hicklin, and Xavier Holmes each scored 12 points. Mitch Riggs added 10 points.

The Royals are back at home on Saturday at 4 p.m. against Tusculum College. The Royals took the first meeting between the two teams by a score of 86-60.
