HICKORY, N.C. – The Queens tennis teams travelled to Lenoir-Rhyne today to take on Bears in an important South Atlantic Conference match. Both the men's and women's teams were able to shrug off any tiredness felt from yesterday's victories, and each cruised to an 8-1 victory.
Men The men were able to jump to an early 3-0 lead following the doubles portion of the match. Inspired by a gutsy 9-8 victory by the team of
Per-Erik Soler and
Jules Athalis, the Royals gained momentum and rolled through their opponents. Also earning victories were the pairings of
Andre Bafume and
Ole-Jacob Meum (8-5), and
Ignacio Casali and
Will Roberson (8-4).
The Royals picked up five more points in the singles portion of the match, with four of the victories coming in straight set. Picking up wins for the visitors were Soler (6-3, 4-6, 6-3), Casali (6-2, 6-3), Meum (6-3, 6-2),
Zachary Williams (6-3, 7-5), and Roberson (6-2, 6-3).
The men are now 10-4 overall and 6-2 in conference.
Women The two doubles teams of
Christina Rustscheff and
Melissa Laing (8-3) and
Jaclyn Rock and
Claire Hamilton (8-1) demonstrated why they are two of the top pairings in the SAC as they picked up early points for the Royals. With a combined two losses between them on the year, the two teams earned their victories with relative ease and set the state for six singles wins.
Using the momentum from doubles Queens earned every possible point in singles in straight sets. Winning for the Royals were Rustscheff (6-2, 6-1), Laing (6-0, 6-2), Rock (6-0, 6-3), Hamilton (6-0, 6-4),
Jessee Clauson (6-0, 6-0), and
Farina Rafiq (6-0, 6-2)
The women are now 12-2 overall and 7-1 in conference play. Both teams travel to Brevard tomorrow.
