SALISBURY, N.C. – The Royals travelled to Catawba College today for their first road trip in South Atlantic Conference history. Showing why they are one of the top teams in the conference Queens rattled off two 7-2 wins, taking the men's record to 5-0 and the women to 4-0.
Men
The Royals men were able to jump to a 2-1 lead with two victories in the doubles portion of the match. Earning wins for Queens was
Per-Erik Soler and
Jules Athalis (9-7), and
Andre Bafume and
Ole-Jacob Meum (8-5).
In the singles portion of the match the Royals won all but one match, with Soler (6-1, 6-4), Bafume (6-2, 6-2), and
Zachary Williams (6-2, 6-1) winning in just two sets. Adding victories for the Royals were
Ignacio Casali (2-6, 6-2, 6-4), and Athalis (4-6, 6-4, 6-2)
Women
The Royals women opened up their match sweeping the doubles portion, and building a 3-0 lead.
Christina Rustscheff and
Melissa Laing led the way with an 8-6 victory, and were followed by
Jaclyn Rock and
Claire Hamilton (8-0), and
Farina Rafiq and
Jessee Clauson (8-2).
In the singles matches the top four Royals all earned points for the team with Rustscheff (6-2, 6-0), Laing (6-0, 6-2), and Rock (6-3, 6-4) needing just two sets to win. Hamilton finished out the match with an intense matchup that she eventually took by the score of 6-7, 6-4, 10-5.
The Royals travel to Mars Hill tomorrow.
