Stokes leads Queens in loss to Eagles

Box Score JEFFERSON CITY, Tenn. – Queens University of Charlotte (12-12) saw their South Atlantic Conference record fall to 10-10 this evening after the Royals lost, 90-75, at Carson-Newman College (18-6) this evening. The Eagles improved to 15-5 in league play with the win.

Senior guard Jarrett Stokes led Queens with 24 points after connecting on 6-of-12 attempts from deep. Also reaching double-digit scoring was senior forward Brent Evans who notched 14 points and grabbed 8 rebounds. Josh Clyburn recorded 12 rebounds and 7 points, while David Mason totaled 9 points.

Following a made layup by Carson-Newman's Carson Brooks 23 seconds into play, Stokes connected on his first three of the game to give the Royals a 3-2 lead. The made basket would spark a 9-3 run that gave the Royals a 12-5 lead at 15:36. A 15-5 run would give them their largest lead of the game, 27-13, midway through the half. Unfortunately, the Eagles went to work chipping away at Queens' lead in the latter part of the half and only trailed Queens by three, 43-40, at the break.

The Royals held on to their lead until 3:40 into the second half when a layup from Brooks of the Eagles gave his team a one-point lead. Carson-Newman quickly stretched their lead out to seven before a five-point push from Queens brought the Royals to within two, 56-54, with 13:29 to play. The Royals couldn't get a stop on the defensive end though as a three-point play the old-fashioned way from Carson-Newman's Antoine Davis put the Eagles back ahead by five.

Queens would cut the Eagles' lead to two once more on a three-pointer from Stokes but Carson-Newman had an answer again going on a 13-1 run to pull ahead by 14 points, 74-60, with 7:09 to play. They would go up by as much as 18 points before the end of regulation.

The Royals were outscored 42-18 in the paint, but won the battle for rebounds, 39-32.

Ishmael Sanders led the Eagles with 31 points, while Davis added 23 points. Brooks finished with 15 points.

Queens is back at home on Wednesday night against Catawba College at 8 p.m.
