Lewis flirts with a triple-double as Royals take out Tornados

Box Score CHARLOTTE, N.C. – The Queens University of Charlotte men's basketball team collected an 81-64 win over Brevard College this evening in Curry Arena. The win improves Queens' South Atlantic Conference record to 3-2 and their overall record to 3-5. The Tornados fall to 1-4 in the SAC and 1-7 on the year.

After both teams traded baskets early in the game, Queens used an 8-0 run out of the under-12 media to pull ahead. The run, capped by a steal and a dunk from Todd Withers, forced the visiting Tornados to call a 30 second timeout with hopes of slowing down the Royals. However, the home team still had the momentum following the short break, putting together an 8-3 push highlighted by back-to-back three-pointers from Marquis Rankin. The junior guard's second three at 5:29 gave Queens its largest lead of the period, 31-15.

Brevard would later find some offense in the form of a pair of threes from Darius Moore in the closing minutes of the half. They would head into the locker room trailing 37-31.

The Royals remained in control of the lead throughout the second half until a layup by Brevard's Stevie Williams at 10:29 put the visiting Tornados ahead for the first time since the opening minute of action. Fortunately for the Royals, Brevard's lead would be short lived as a lay-in from Jacarl Owens put the home team back on top where they would remain for the rest of play. Queens went on to stretch their lead out to as much as 19 points before the final buzzer sounded.

Junior guard Rob Lewis was just two rebounds shy of a triple-double tonight after recording 19 points, 10 assists and 8 rebounds. The rest of the starting five was well balanced in scoring with Morgan and Withers netting 12 points, while Rankin finished with 11 points and Trey Ervin added 10 points. Owens completed the game with nine points, while Jared Hendryx contributed eight points, pulled down eight rebounds and totaled four blocks. Withers also grabbed seven rebounds.

The Tornados were led by Moose, the SAC's leading scorer, who was held to just 15 points. Trevon Shaw added 13 points, while Williams and Alex Moe added nine points apiece.

Queens returns to action on Monday night when they travel across town to face Johnson C. Smith University. Tip-off is set for 8 p.m.
