Morgan records double-double in road loss at Lander

Box Score GREENWOOD, S.C. - After leading for over 32 minutes in today's game against Lander University, the Queens University of Charlotte men's basketball team fell 71-67 on the road in a non-conference regional game with the Bearcats. Lander opens its season at 2-0 going undefeated in the Lander Classic, while the Royals will begin conference play on Wednesday at 0-2.

Junior forward Sean Morgan led the Royals recording his first double-double of the year with 17 points and 10 rebounds. The Kennesaw, Ga., native shot 7-of-10 from the floor and 3-of-4 from the charity stripe to net his points on the day. Junior guard Marquis Rankin was productive today as well scoring 16 points on 6-of-7 shooting from the floor. The newcomer led the Royals from behind the three-point arc shooting 2-of-3 from deep. Junior guard Rob Lewis added 14 points and five assists.

Following a jumper from Lewis at the start of the second half that extended the Royals' lead to seven, the Bearcats would turn two Queens turnovers into fast break baskets to pull with three of the visitors. A made free-throw and four straight points from Lewis would return the Royals' lead to eight, but Lander would not let up as the home team put together a 14-6 push to take a one-point lead, 54-53, with 9:05 to play.

The two teams would trade baskets and the lead multiple times in the closing minutes of action with Queens taking a four-point advantage on a pair of free-throws from Lewis followed by a layup from Rankin with just 2:48 on the clock. Unfortunately, Rankin's layup would be the final bucket of the game for the Royals as Lander closed the game scoring eight straight points, six coming from the foul line, to solidify their home win.

At the start of the game Queens won the tip and took an early lead scoring the first basket of the game on a layup from Morgan. The Bearcats would tie things up a few times in the opening minutes, but the Royals would use a 12-1 run to build a 16-5 lead with13:18 to play. A three-pointer at 9:33 from Rankin gave the Royals their largest lead of the game, 25-13, but a 9-2 push by the Bearcats in the final four minutes of the half cut Queens' lead to five at the break.

Morgan led the Royals at the half with 12 points after shooting a perfect 5-of-5 from the floor. The junior forward also shot 100-percetn from the foul line and pulled down seven rebounds.

The Bearcats were able to score 25 points off of the Royals' 24 turnovers today, though the Royals outscored Lander in the paint, 42-30. Queens also won the battle under the glass pulling down 33 rebounds to Lander's 27.

Lander was led by Tobiasz Hose, who scored 14 points. Shavanno Cooper added 13 points, while Kiair Couch scored 12 points. Mike Lee chipped in with 10 points.
