Queens picks up conference win over Mars Hill

Box Score CHARLOTTE, N.C. – Senior guard Jarrett Stokes scored 23 points this evening as Queens University of Charlotte defeated Mars Hill University, 82-73, in Curry Arena. The win brings the Royals' league record to 3-3, while also improving their overall record to 5-5. The Lions fall to 2-9 on the season and are 0-6 in the SAC.

Stokes shot 9-17 from the floor and 4-5 from the charity stripe today. Joining him in double-digit scoring was sophomore guard Joby Glymph who contributed with 17 points, six rebounds and six assists. Junior forward Nkosi Ali added 14 points and 10 rebounds for his first double-double of the season, while senior forward Josh Clyburn chipped in with 10 points and 8 rebounds.

Queens led the entire game after opening with a 14-2 run. A pair of three-pointers from Mars Hill's Carter Wright would cut the lead down to six, 14-8, with 13:56 to play. From that point on the two teams would trade scoring spurts until the halftime break.

Out of the break, the Royals would extend their lead out to 13 points, 59-46, relying heavily on getting to the basket for layups or connecting on foul shots. However, the Lions would get hot late cutting Queens' lead down to three, 71-68, with 4:26 to play.

A thirty-second timeout would be all the Royals needed to regroup as they scored six quick points to increase their lead back out to nine, 77-68, just before the final media of the game at 2:28. Stokes would complete his three-point play out of the media to give Queens a 10-point lead.

A free-throw and a lay-up from Mars Hills Wright would bring the Lions to within seven of Queens, but time was on the Royals' side as Stokes sealed the victory with a pair of free-throws with 14 seconds on the clock.

The Royals nearly doubled Mars Hill's points in the paint scoring 44 to their 24. Queens also outrebounded the Lions 60-50.

Devonte Williams led the Lions with 25 points, while Wright added 15 points. Isaiah Cuthberston recorded a double-double with 11 points and 14 rebounds. Will White pulled down 11 rebounds.

Queens returns to the court on January 8 at Coker College. Tip-off is at 8 p.m.
