Box Score CHARLOTTE, N.C. – Queens University of Charlotte hosted Newberry College this evening to face the Wolves for the first time this season in women's basketball action. The Royals fell 57-42 to Newberry bringing their record to 4-9 in the SAC and 5-12 on the season. The Wolves improve to 7-6 in the league and 11-6 overall with the win.
Sophomore guard
Nikia Squire led the Royals with 16 points on 7-of-13 shooting. Squire also recorded eight rebounds, and three steals. Senior forward
Shonice Pettaway added 11 points, 5 rebounds and four blocks.
After a first half where the Royals shot just 24 percent from the floor to put up 15 points, Queens found itself trailing the visiting Wolves by 16.
The Royals' offense would pick up in the second half as they slowly chipped away at Newberry's lead. A fastbreak layup from Squire at 8:48 would cap a 17-6 run to bring Queens to within two, 42-40, of the Wolves. Squire would also go on to score the next bucket for Queens at 7:02. The jumper would be the final basket for Queens as Newberry closed the game with a 13-0 run to take the win.
The Royals shot 42.3 percent from the floor in the second half of tonight's game.
Haylee Lepaio led the Wolves' offense with 19 points. She also led in rebounds with nine. Zara Pearson and Tasia Holdorf each scored 17 points.
Queens is on the road on Saturday at Tusculum College. Tip-off is at 2 p.m.
